A lot of people ask us why we’re building nycandlove.com and how it’s going to be different from the myriad of other online dating websites on offer. For us the biggest problem with other sites is that we don’t want to, or can’t, use them. They’re either too complicated, involve long questionnaires or don’t have members that live near us.
This isn’t to say that our competitors aren’t great, which many of them are, but just that they don’t cater specifically to us, the people who live work and play in New York City. This city is a very unique place; geographically, culturally and socially and we feel that it’s impossible for a website designed for a global audience to satisfy our requirements. For example, what use is a search radius of 25 miles which includes large parts of New Jersey when you live in Manhattan? Especially when most New Yorkers don’t own cars and rely entirely on public transport.
Faced with this unique opportunity to build an online dating website exclusively for New Yorkers, something which were surprised didn’t already exist, we also decided to take a step back and look at how we could improve the overall online dating experience. We looked at the way people communicate, both online and face to face, the way they organize their social calendar and the things they love, and hate, about other online dating sites. Over the next few weeks we’ll be posting more about what sets us apart and makes us the online dating site that New Yorkers deserve.
